The Christmas Holiday season is already in full swing and with increased temptations, it can be really tough to stay on track of your health and fitness goals. With that in mind, here are our 5 top tips for how to avoid gaining excess weight over the Holiday Season:

1. “It’s okay, it’s Christmas!”
Our mindsets toward food and drink tend to change significantly at this time of year and why? Because ‘it’s Christmas!’. This is a common phrase that we hear and that we tell ourselves as good reasoning for a change of habits including eating and drinking far more than we usually would.
“Should I eat that extra cookie? Why not! It’s Christmas!”, “Should I eat chocolate until I can’t move? Sure! It’s Christmas!”, “I’ve not eaten any fruits or vegetables all day, so what! It’s Christmas!” You get the gist but unfortunately, eating above your daily calorie burn will lead to weight gain. Whilst Christmas treats are delicious, remember balance is the key.
2. Stay active!
Whilst laying around in my pyjamas all day watching Christmas movies and eating lots of cheese is one of my favourite things to do over the Christmas holidays, it’s far more enjoyable to know that I’ve earned it!
Wrap up warm and go for walks with your family and friends. This is a great way to burn a few extra calories, boost your overall health & wellbeing and have precious time with your family away from food and drink temptations (and the general mania of Christmas!). You can also opt for a full body home workout or if your gym is open and you can get a weights session in, even better!
3. Stay hydrated!
Water is crucial for maintaining a healthy body and is also a great health hack to help curb hunger and prevent overeating. Fill your Xcore Nutrition gallon water bottle each morning, take with you on your outings and consume throughout the day. Staying hydrated will also keep you feeling energised!.
Christmas hack…Want to cut down on the usual Christmas alcohol indulgence? Drink water out of a wine or cocktail glass! Add a few slices of cucumber, lemon or lime instead of (or alternating between) your usual alcohol choice.
4. Stock up on delicious protein snacks!
Let’s face it, there’s food everywhere this time of year! Friends, family and colleagues seem to be constantly eating. If you’re like me, you’ll start to get fed up of declining offers of biscuits, crackers, chocolates etc. and feeling left out of the festivities. Luckily, I’ve found such a simple solution for this!
5. Plan ahead!
Christmas events are often organised months in advance. Know your calendar of activities and plan accordingly – allow yourself times and days where you eat more and have your treats and days where you eat less.
For example, I have a 3-course Christmas meal with colleagues at 6 pm on Friday, therefore, I will reduce my usual food intake throughout the day and drink more water to stay hydrated and ready for a few drinks Friday evening!
